“DIGITAL GIRLS”, SECOND EDITION OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR GIRLS

Web, social, apps, games and information technology security for the engineers of the future

After the first edition’s success in 2014, the department of engineering of Modena and Reggio Emilia's University, in collaboration with Reggio Emilia chapter of European Women's Management Development (EWMD) and with the Vignola Foundation, is proposing from June 15 until July 10 at the Department of engineering “Enzo Ferrari” in Modena the Digital Girls summer program. Girls from third and fourth year of high school will dive into an educational path, whose main theme will be the development of interactive games apps, with in-depths analysis on the web, information technology security, design and graphic elements, social networks.

The project is sponsored, among the others, by Emilia Romagna Region and by the municipalities of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Its goal is to overcome the gender digital gap by promoting the active role of women in working environments linked to the new technologies and IT services and applications. Women are still poorly involved in this field, even though the ICT’s sector offers the widest job’s perspectives. With this goal, the degree course of informatics engineering at the university has promoted a summer camp of four weeks, the first in Italy dedicated to just girls, to make them gradually closer to the “smart” world and to the methodologies for the creation of digital services.

According to EU data by 2020 there will be 900 thousand vacant job places in Europe because of the lack of digital competence among young people. The occupation and growth possibilities for young people and companies are countless, and girls must be ready for the challenge. Without considering cultural and sociological reasons, the reality is that just 10% of girls enroll and get a bachelor degree in Informatics Engineering. This causes a double damage: to girls because they exclude themselves from the innumerable job possibilities in the IT and digital field; and to the society because it will not be able to benefit from the innovative ideas of women. The summer camp has a triple goal: eliminate the old stereotypes on the idea of the woman engineer, to get girls closer to the IT theme that is and will be fundamental for our future, to live the experience of an academic campus from the inside. The course will allow learning by “doing”, in concrete collaboration with the University young researchers. It is possible to enroll on the website www.ragazzedigitali.it
